England boss Gareth Southgate says it's uncertain whether Manchester United star Luke Shaw will include him in their Euro 2024 squad.
Shaw is currently sidelined with a muscle injury after coming off injured in United’s 2-1 win over Luton Town in February. Initial reports suggested he might miss the rest of the season.
United’s official update ruled Shaw out ‘for a few months’ with no specific return timeline.
His latest injury setback has cast doubt on his place in the England squad this summer with Southgate admitting they could face a tough decision.
On Wednesday, the England boss revealed his England squad for upcoming friendlies against Brazil and Belgium.
Asked if Shaw’s participation at the Euros is ‘touch and go’, Southgate told BBC Radio 5 Live: ‘Well, we have to say yes is the answer to that because the timelines would suggest he will only be available in the dying embers of the season.
‘You don’t know what version of the player you are going to get.
‘We might have everybody that is currently injured back and available and how fit and how match fit and how robust to get through a tournament, we are going to have to work that out as well in the next few months.’
Elsewhere at left-back for England, Ben Chilwell has also struggled with injury at Chelsea this season and has only won two caps for his country since 2021. Levi Colwill has often played in that position for the Blues.
Manchester City's young star Rico Lewis made his England debut against North Macedonia in November while Kieran Trippier has been used at left-back before.
Shaw started all five of England’s games at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar and was also first-choice at Euro 2020 when he scored in the final against Italy.
The United defender has only made 15 starting appearances in an injury-hit season. The 28-year-old was sidelined for three months with a separate muscle issue earlier in the campaign, missing three more games over the festive period.
His latest injury has caused problems for Erik ten Hag with Tyrell Malacia also unavailable and unlikely to feature at all this season.
Lisandro Martinez has also been sidelined since early February. The Argentina international will join up with his national teammates for friendlies against El Salvador and Costa Rica for this month’s international break but is not expected to feature in those games.
United hope to have him back for their game against Brentford on 30 March.
