Antoine Griezmann mocked Alexis Sanchez after failing to score a penalty in Inter’s Champions League elimination by Atletico Madrid on Wednesday evening.
Inter had a narrow 1-0 lead going into the second leg of their Champions League last-16 match and seemed likely to advance to the quarterfinal after
Federico Dimarco put them in the lead in the 33rd minute.
Griezmann quickly equalized, but Atletico later needed a goal from Memphis Depay in the 87th minute to make the aggregate score 2-2 and force extra time.
After an additional 30 minutes, the two teams were still level, and Jan Oblak became Atletico’s hero in the penalty shootout by stopping penalties from both Sanchez and Davy Klaassen.
Griezmann was taken out in extra time due to injury, so he was unable to take a penalty. However, the France international was caught on camera celebrating Sanchez’s miss on the sideline by Spanish TV station Movistar.
In the video, Griezmann was seen speaking to Atletico midfielder Rodrigo De Paul in Spanish, saying, ‘es un cagón, el chileno es un cagón’, which translates to ‘he’s a coward, the Chilean is a coward’ in English. The word ‘cagón’ in Spanish is a derogatory term for someone who is afraid or apprehensive.
Discussing Griezmann’s desire to keep playing despite his injury, Diego Simeone said after Atletico’s shootout victory: ‘Until he could, he was there.
‘When he couldn’t stand his legs he asked for a change. That’s what men do.’
Atletico now await their fate before Friday’s Champions League quarter-final draw.
Simeone’s team is one of eight teams left in the Champions League, along with Real Madrid, Barcelona, Arsenal, Manchester City, Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, and Paris Saint-Germain.
