Donald Tusk, the Prime Minister of Poland, asked Speaker Mike Johnson to push a Ukraine funding package through the House. He cautioned that the lives of millions of people are at risk if it doesn't happen.
Tusk, speaking outside the White House after meeting with President Biden, warned that if Johnson doesn't act, thousands of lives in Ukraine, including those of women and children, could be lost.
He expressed hope that Poland's influence would change Johnson's stance. He emphasized the significant impact of Johnson's decision on the lives of millions of people and thousands of lives in Ukraine.
Tusk acknowledged the political differences in Congress over funding Ukraine but argued that Johnson’s decision would have a global impact.
According to Tusk, the consequences of Johnson's decision would extend beyond America and could cost thousands of lives, including children and women, in Ukraine.
Tusk's comments were first delivered in Polish and later translated into a foreign pool report.
These remarks followed a call from Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell for Johnson to bring the Senate-passed foreign aid bill to the House floor.
McConnell encouraged the Speaker to allow a vote on the $95 billion emergency spending package for Ukraine that passed the Senate.
The emergency spending package received 70 votes, including support from 22 Republican senators.
Recent weeks have seen Ukrainian forces losing territory to Russia due to dwindling supplies of weapons and ammunition. They withdrew from the city of Avdiivka last month.
The Biden administration announced it will send a $300 million military package to Ukraine to help resupply its forces, but this amount is much smaller than the $60 billion included in the Senate-passed bill.
