The Patriots are set to sign former Steelers defensive lineman Armon Watts to a 1-year contract that could earn him up to $3 million, according to a source.
Watts, 27, played as a backup in Pittsburgh, where he had 15 tackles, three quarterback hits, and a half-sack in 15 games. He began his career as a sixth-round pick for the Vikings in 2019 and had five sacks and 46 tackles in a standout 2021 season. Watts then joined Chicago, where he started 12 games but only managed one sack and two quarterback hits in 2022.
At 6 feet 5 inches tall and weighing 307 pounds, Watts is expected to provide depth behind top defensive tackles Davon Godchaux and Christian Barmore. Earlier in the offseason, the Patriots released veteran defensive tackle Lawrence Guy, who had been a starter in New England for seven seasons.
