Sabotage Studio has stated that they will introduce local multiplayer to Sea Of Stars, as the RPG celebrates more than five million players.
Along with the likes of Cocoon and Dredge, Sea Of Stars was one of the most successful indie games of 2023.
The role-playing game is heavily influenced by genre classics like Chrono Trigger (and even includes music by that game’s composer Yasunori Mitsuda), allowing you to control various characters in turn-based battles with a throwback art style.
Almost seven months after its release in August, developer Sabotage Studio has revealed that the game will receive a local multiplayer mode for three players in a future update.
As outlined in a press release, a mode called Single Player+ will enable three players to collaborate in Sea Of Stars and participate in a new ‘co-op timed hits’ mechanic in battles.
‘Remaining true to the game’s fundamental turn-based style, each player will take part in exploration and combat with a new ‘co-op timed hits’ mechanic as they set off with friends on Sea Of Stars’ epic adventure,’ the announcement explains. ‘The new mode is currently in progress, and more details will be disclosed soon.’
A brief teaser was also published to demonstrate the co-op mode, although it only depicts three players roaming through the environment. It is likely that you can also play with two players, but technically that has not been confirmed.
The developer also revealed that Sea Of Stars has exceeded five million total players since its launch in August last year across PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch and PC. It was also available on PS Plus and Xbox Game Pass.
Sabotage previously announced Sea Of Stars had sold 250,000 copies within its first week on sale, which is five times more than their first game The Messenger managed in the same timeframe.
