A father encountered a huge locust after unpacking his groceries from Aldi, suspecting it came home with him in a bag of celery.
39-year-old Lee Westacott found the hefty bug on the inside of his fridge door after unloading his purchases from the budget supermarket.
‘It’s like a jacked-up grasshopper,’ the shocked cable jointer said.
Although his son was amazed by the discovery, Lee was not as impressed and decided to discard his vegetables.
He contacted Aldi to express his dissatisfaction, and they provided him with a £5 voucher as compensation.
They also informed him that he could receive a refund for his bag of celery if he returns it to the store, but Lee was not interested in doing so.
‘It was probably about three inches – it’s quite a big bug,’ he said. ‘It’s now in a bag in the kitchen.’
Lee, from Droitwich Spa in Worcestershire, mentioned: ‘We bought some celery and some other vegetables so I’m guessing it’s come out of one of those packets.
‘I have contacted [Aldi] and they’ve sent me an email back saying they’ll give me a £5 goodwill voucher to use for a future shop.
‘Initially, I didn’t know if it had been all over the food in the fridge.
‘Aldi said what I could do was take the pack of celery back to them and they’d refund the bag but I’m probably going to throw most of it away.’
An Aldi spokesperson stated: ‘While it has not been possible to establish whether this insect came from an Aldi product, such a rare finding can occasionally occur with products that are grown in natural conditions.
‘We have apologised to Mr Westacott and would encourage him to return the packaging of any opened fresh produce to his nearest store for a full refund.’
