The Winchester boys hockey team continues to produce heroes, and Luke Sardone bravely took his turn to be the hero.
In a state semifinal game on Saturday night at Loring Arena, Sardone scored the winning goal in overtime with 1:52 remaining, securing a 3-2 victory over Arlington Catholic.
Aiden Emerick made 23 saves and Sardone, who previously assisted on golden goals in two other overtime wins, ensured that their team did not lose after letting go of a 2-0 lead in the first period.
Winchester advances to the state final for the first time since 2019 and will face the winner of the St. John’s Prep – Xaverian semifinal on March 17 at TD Garden.
Sardone expressed his excitement, stating that while assisting in a goal feels good, scoring it is even better. He also emphasized the significance of reaching the Garden, as it is a rare feat for public schools in recent years.
On March 2, Red and Black head coach Gino Khachadourian joked about not wanting to see who would deliver the next overtime game-winner. Sardone stepped up and delivered.
During the extra time, Winchester only allowed one shot on their goal, and Luke Sardone scored the game-winning goal, sending the crowd into a frenzy.
Khachadourian praised Sardone for his performance in overtime, likening their journey to a captivating story or Netflix series where they keep winning. He believed that their team was truly special.
The crowd’s energy was fueled by the team's fast start, scoring twice in less than a minute to take a 2-0 lead in the first period.
Cougars goalie Patrick Clair made 34 saves, keeping Winchester from scoring until the end of regulation, giving his team a chance to rally and eventually forcing overtime.
The game remained tied until the end of overtime, as both teams were steadfast in the crucial moments.
Khachadourian expressed the significance of the win, highlighting the impact on the town, community, and public schools.
