Andrew Scott’s mother, Nora Scott, has died.
The Irish actor, known for his roles in Fleabag and BBC Sherlock as well as critically acclaimed new film All Of Us Strangers, has been left devastated by the sudden loss of his mum, who died after a ‘sudden illness’ on Thursday.
While Andrew himself has not publicly commented on Nora’s death, the family shared an announcement on website RIP.ie.
They said it was ‘with our deepest sorry that we inform you of the passing of Nora Scott (nee Boyle), beloved wife of Jim, mother of Sarah, Andrew and Hannah.’
Nora, originally from Omagh in County Tyrone but who lived in Sandymount, Dublin, died on Thursday, March 7, ‘peacefully surrounded by her loving family and best friend Anne.’
She died at St Vincent’s Hospital in Dublin, ‘following a sudden illness.’
The announcement went on to say the mum-of-three would be ‘deeply missed by her beloved husband Jim, her loving children Sarah, Andrew and Hannah, much loved daughter-in-law Janine, sisters Gertrude and Molly and brother Andrew, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nephew, nieces, relatives, neighbours and many friends.’
Her funeral is due to take place on Tuesday, March 12 in Dublin.
Andrew shared a close bond with his mother, and during a 2019 appearance on The Graham Norton Show revealed he had been sworn to secrecy when he was cast to appear in an episode of Black Mirror, but could not resist telling his mum.
He said at the time: ‘The whole thing was shrouded in mystery.
‘No-one tells you what’s going on and then you’re sworn to secrecy. You can’t tell anyone, but I told my mum.’
And in 2018, Nora herself told a story about how she was surprised with a very thoughtful gift by none other than celebrated actor Anthony Hopkins.
Nora was unwell at the time, and Andrew – who was working with Anthony on a production of King Lear – told him his mum was under the weather.
Anthony then sent three dozen red roses to Nora as a get well soon gift, with Nora describing him as ‘a sweetheart’ in a conversation with RTE’s Ryan Tubridy.
‘There was probably more than three dozen red roses and attached to them was a little card from Anthony saying “Be well, sending hugs”, and all sorts of things.
‘I was thrilled to get such a gift and for the kind thought that promoted it.’
