In Hull and East Riding of Yorkshire, police raided three funeral directors after receiving a report expressing worries about the treatment of the deceased.
The report, received by officers on Wednesday, brought up alleged problems at three locations operated by Legacy Independent Funeral Directors.
Humberside Police's Detective Chief Superintendent Simon Gawthorpe urged people not to speculate about the incident, acknowledging that families and loved ones may be affected.
The police have established a helpline for individuals who have used the company and are concerned about the treatment of their deceased relatives.
Det Ch Supt Gawthorpe stated: 'Although we are in the early stages of our investigation, I fully understand that this information will worry many families and individuals who have lost loved ones and used the company's services.
‘We have already been in contact with a number of people as part of our investigation, and we are collaborating with His Majesties Coroner, Hull City Council, and East Riding Council to verify the facts.
‘I would urge anyone to call us, as we are very aware of the distress this may cause.’
