A pair traveling through southeast Asia on a motorcycle have stated that they were violently assaulted by a group of men.
The woman claimed she was sexually assaulted by a minimum of seven men using a knife at a forest camp where they had set up their tent in India.
‘They beat us and robbed us, but their main goal was to sexually assault me,’ she remarked.
Her Brazilian husband added that he had also been savagely beaten.
‘Furthermore, they threatened me with a knife, saying they would kill me,’ he stated.
He mentioned that both of them were currently in the hospital and had spoken to the authorities about the incident on Friday night.
The authorities got involved after encountering the couple near a road, but initially had difficulty understanding what had happened as the couple were speaking a mixture of Spanish and English.
After using Google Translate, they were able to understand the accusations.
Four people have been arrested in relation to the incident in Dumka district in the eastern state of Jharkhand.
Police chief Ajay Kumar Singh informed The Indian Express newspaper that all men involved in the alleged incident had been identified and would be captured ‘soon’.
The Brazilian embassy in New Delhi stated that they had been informed of a Brazilian citizen with dual Spanish nationality and her Spanish husband being victims of a serious criminal attack in the Jharkhand state, northeast India, this weekend.
The couple had been on a once-in-a-lifetime trip on their motorcycles, entering India through West Bengal after previously spending time in Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh.
They had planned to continue their journey through India and then on to Nepal.
